What is Shiatsu?

Shiatsu is a gentle and powerful Japanese healing art which literally translated means finger pressure. Originating from oriental massage it affects the same points and meridians worked on in Acupuncture; but uses a method of gentle pressure through touch, to re-establish flow of energy and well-being.

Shiatsu Massage - Shiatsu is traditional Japanese massage based on Chinese acupuncture, modified to be a non-invasive therapy which balances the body's energy.

Literally meaning "finger-pressure" though thumbs, palms, elbows, knees and sometimes feet can be used, shiatsu can be applied as a preventative therapy, seeking to address the underlying causes of dis-ease as well as the symptoms. The Chinese devised a system of marking energy channels - meridians- along our bodies. Most meridians are linked to a major body organ, like the liver, lungs or kidneys.

Oriental medicine does not look for a specific disease, rather it tries to diagnose the imbalanced phenomenon occurring in a particular person. It attempts to look for the root of the cause, the long term environmental, constitutional and behavioral issues.

The manifesting relative balance of levels of energy, an interplay of cause and effect, movement and stillness, excess and deficiency, manifests everyday in our health and well-being.

Zen shiatsu diagnosis and treatment works with the here and now, the immediate state of the distribution of energy within the network of meridians, fluids and tissues.

Therapy can vary from physical manipulation of the muscles and joints, to pressure on your meridians and points (tsubos) along those channels. This may improve the circulation and the flow of Qi and fluids such as blood and lymph. Enhancing our postural integrity greatly benefits our general emotional and physical flexibility and well-being. Allowing the body's natural healing process to comes into play.
