Memory Foam Helps Relive Back Pain

Back pain is a fact of life for millions of Americans today. The problem is both pervasive and expensive; only cancer and heart disease account for more health care dollars spent.

Some back pain may be rooted in a serious condition requiring medical attention. You should always consult your doctor if you believe you have a medical condition. However, there are other types of back pain that can be effectively managed without drugs or surgery. Memory foam is one form of treatment that has helped many Americans find relief.

Common types of back pain include:

  • Mechanical back pain, also referred to as axial pain.

  • Herniated discs are another common source of back pain. More than 1/3 of adults over twenty are discovered to have a herniated disc at autopsy. A herniated disc may cause no pain at all, or it may cause debilitating back pain and even paralysis.

Mechanical Pain
Most people have healthy backs, they just don't care for them properly. The most common root cause of back pain is poor conditioning and a lack of exercise.

The weaker the muscles and ligaments in the spine become, the more susceptible they are to strains and injury. Most people respond to back pain by seeking less activity, when they should really be pursuing a sensible exercise routine.

A memory foam mattress can help the spine get some much needed recovery time at night. The unique characteristics of a memory foam mattress allow for proper support of the spine; vertebrae are aligned and not strained, or twisted in unnatural positions.

For someone suffering from lower back pain, proper alignment at night allows the spine to repair injuries suffered during the day. If one is exercising regularly, this rest and recovery becomes even more important.  A memory foam bed can help you body alignment while you sleep.

Herniated Discs
Another potentially serious source of back pain is a herniated disc. Discs are layers of tissue between vertebrae that act as cushions for the bones. They are made up of a tough, fibrous outer sheath with a viscous fluid at the center, often compared to a jelly donut.

As people age, these discs often lose blood flow and weaken. Sometimes, the outer sheath can rupture, allowing the fluid at the center to leak out. In some cases, this leaked fluid creates pressure on nerves that can be excruciatingly painful, or even cause paralysis.

While memory foam is by no means a treatment for herniated discs, the alignment of the spine that it provides can reduce some stress on discs, making them less likely to rupture. Also, because the spine is properly aligned, blood flows more easily and this improved circulation may help to keep discs healthy.

The spine is the foundation of our body, and as such, it takes a lot of abuse during the day. A memory foam mattress can help to reduce that strain at night and give the spine some much needed recovery time.
